PORTRAITS

My portraits range from artists to company executives and non-profit organizations. I specialize in on-location portraits, whether that be an office of a high-rise building or a vineyard.

From the portrait series “Dancing Between Two Worlds,” of the Kashaya Pomo dance group “Su Nu Nu Shinal.”

I photographed ten individuals in traditional Kashaya Pomo regalia at a sacred dance circle in Northern California and later portrayed them in their modern lives. The diptych images reveal the sharp contrast between the dual identities of each dancer, traditional Kashaya and modern American.

The lead dancer, Jerry Pinola, told me: “When I’m dancing, I’m not Jerry. My ancestors didn’t want me to be this guy. The modern world is putting on a costume for me, something that I'm pretending to be.”

Examples of portraits shot on location.
